I have domesticated the free, open source Apache Solr/Lucene search engine, making it be people (users and tech staff) friendly, and fitting nicely within our OES servers or be an appliance. I discuss the design and mention coping with evolution. The design expects the system to support many local groups, each with their own data, and do so efficiently (resources, people relations).
