Michael Maguire is Executive Director, Compliance Promotion and Engagement at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, where he has worked since 2012. He and his team provide advice to federal government institutions and private sector organizations with a view to fostering responsible innovation and increased compliance with Canada’s federal privacy laws.
Prior to taking on his current role, Michael was Director of PIPEDA Compliance, leading investigations that resulted in numerous internationally significant findings (e.g., 23andMe breach, Google de-listing, TikTok children’s privacy, Tim Hortons mobile location tracking, Clearview AI facial recognition technology, Facebook Cambridge Analytica). Michael is also an enforcement cooperation specialist: a prior member of the Management Committee for the Global Privacy Enforcement Network, coordinating the first ever GPEN Privacy Sweep; and co-drafter of the Global Privacy Assembly’s Enforcement Cooperation Handbook. Michael holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from the University of Ottawa, and a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School
